Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16 1937 - 17 August, 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer famous for her part in the role of Batgirl in the 1960s' television series Batman as well as her role as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer in female superheroes for television." Yvonne Craig was raised in Columbus and was born in Taylorville in Illinois. Her family relocated in 1951 from Illinois to Dallas. There she attended W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas as well as Sunset High School. However she did not get a degree because she did not have "one credits for PE". Craig was discovered by Alexandra Danilova (a ballerina and teacher) and was accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as its youngest corps de ballet member. It was an amazing experience that enabled her to do stunts as Batgirl. In 1957, she left the company "over a dispute on changes to casting". She moved to Los Angeles in hopes of continuing her dance career. But, she soon found herself in films roles. One of her first TV performances was on an episode from the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover" 1958) along with Neil Hamilton, who played her stepfather (later Hamilton played Police Commissioner James Gordon, Batgirl's father). She appeared in three movies shortly after, The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story and Gidget (all 1959). Craig also appeared in the TV series Mr. Lucky, as Beverly Mills, in the episode "Little Miss Wow" Also in 1959. Craig appeared in films with Bing Crosby (1960), and Seven Women from Hell (1961), which featured Cesar Romero. In 1962, she was the guest on Western Laramie's "The Long Road Back" episode. She also appeared with Bing Crosby in High Time (1960) and Seven Women from Hell (1961), both of which included Cesar Romero. Craig also starred in two Elvis Presley films: It Happened in the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin Cousins (1964). In the year 1966, she was a part-time actress in Mars Needs Women. In 1967, she played a Russian ballet dancer in In Like Flint.
