Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to promote activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate through the medium of art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury and go through their garbage. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Neben PR, her agency has created lifestyle networks and promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
